What is cholesterol?

It is a fat like substance that can come from food (like animal products) and is also made in your body.


What are the two types of cholesterol?

There are two types of cholesterol, LDL (bad) and HDL (good). HDL, or good cholesterol, protects against heart attack and stroke. LDL, or bad cholesterol, increases your risk for heart attacks and strokes. It is important to get both checked at your doctor!

What are the negative effects of cholesterol?

Too much LDL cholesterol can build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain, creating a blockage over time that can cause heart attack or stroke.

How can I prevent high cholesterol?

You can prevent high cholesterol through exercising more, quitting smoking, losing weight, and eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, chicken, fish, and nuts and, decreasing red and processed meats, sodium and sugary foods and beverages
